Los Cabos restaurants: what AI recommends and what it cannot read

114 lists from 6 AI assistants, 142 different businesses and a closed one that kept being recommended. With Plexa data.

In short: We asked 6 AI assistants the same 10 questions about where to eat in Los Cabos and collected 114 lists. 142 different businesses showed up. Among a sample of 20 of the most mentioned restaurants, the number of mentions does not predict how many of 7 technical points their website meets (correlation of −0.05). A permanently closed restaurant was still recommended 8 times.

What we asked AI about restaurants in Los Cabos

On October 23, 2026 we asked 10 fixed questions, 8 in English and 2 in Spanish: best seafood restaurant in Cabo San Lucas, where to eat near the marina tonight, romantic dinner with a sunset view, best tacos, family-friendly restaurants in San José del Cabo, where to eat late, a birthday dinner, where locals eat, and two more on seafood and ocean views. Each question was asked twice, in a fresh conversation, to six assistants: Meta AI (Muse), ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google's AI Overview and Google Maps. That is 120 queries, 114 with a list: in 6, Google showed no AI Overview.

Study carried out by the Plexa team on October 23, 2026. It ran on the free versions of the assistants, and AI answers change from one day to the next: it shows what they answered that day, and another day may differ. [1]

The Los Cabos restaurants AI recommends most

142 different businesses appeared in the organic lists. Sponsored Google Maps results were excluded (one restaurant showed up 9 times as an ad and never organically). These are the 14 with 10 mentions or more, each with its Plexa listing:

Las Guacamayas, La Lupita and Mariscos El Toro Güero have branches in more than one area, and the mentions count the brand. The study reviewed the San José del Cabo branch of Las Guacamayas and La Lupita, and the Cabo San Lucas branch of Mariscos El Toro Güero. On Plexa all three link to the Cabo San Lucas listing. Los Claros also has several branches: the downtown one was reviewed and is the one linked.

Tied at 9 mentions are Manta, Edith's, Baja Brewing Company (also with several branches: the San José del Cabo one was reviewed and the linked listing is the Cabo San Lucas one) and Cielomar Rooftop. The sample of 20 we reviewed also includes Cocina del Mar and a seafood restaurant on the Cabo San Lucas marina that has since closed, with 8 mentions each (three other restaurants tied at 8 and are not in the sample). [1]

What the five most recommended Los Cabos restaurants have in common

We reviewed a sample of 20 of the most mentioned restaurants: their website, Google listing, TripAdvisor and booking links. For each site we counted up to 7 technical points: menu as text, prices as text, English version, hours on the site, schema.org Restaurant, schema.org opening hours and llms.txt. The five most mentioned average 2.6 points and the rest of the sample 1.7. Three of the five score 4 or 5 (part of those points come from the hotel's or chain's site or llms.txt) and two score 0. In total, 8 of the 20 score 0.

The Spearman correlation, which measures whether two lists rise and fall together, between mentions and those points was −0.05 (n=20): we found no relationship. Between mentions and TripAdvisor review count it was 0.17 (n=17, those with verifiable data), a weak relationship. The five most mentioned have between 1,060 and 8,322 TripAdvisor reviews, rated 4.5 or higher. That data comes from search results and cached copies, because TripAdvisor blocked direct access, and its age varies. [1]

Two of those five have no working website: one links to a third-party directory and the other has a parked domain for sale. The assistants do cite official sites when they exist: ChatGPT cited those of Sunset Monalisa, Hacienda Cocina y Cantina and Edith's, and Perplexity those of Solomon's Landing and Sunset Monalisa. We did not measure whether they read the menu, and neither the site nor the reviews explain the order of mentions well. [1]

What AI cannot read about the most recommended Los Cabos restaurants

In the sample of 20, what a machine would need to answer with the restaurant's own data is scarce: [1]

  • Menu as text on the page: 6 of 20. Another 6 have it only as a PDF or an image.
  • Prices as text: 1 of 20, Manta.
  • Schema.org type Restaurant: 3 of 20. Type Menu: none.
  • WhatsApp published: at least 4 of 20 (2 could not be checked).
  • Working website: 14 of 20. The other 6 are a parked domain, a domain error, a broken link, social media only or a third-party directory.

A closed restaurant that AI recommended 8 times

A seafood restaurant on the Cabo San Lucas marina received 8 mentions across 3 questions, from 4 different assistants. Its Google listing and OpenTable mark it as permanently closed. Its website is still online. [1]

It does not look like an isolated case. We asked Google for the status of the 131 mentioned restaurants that have a Plexa listing and a Google Maps identifier (place_id). 125 show as open, 4 as permanently closed (among them a seafood restaurant on the marina and a taquería) and 2 as temporarily closed. The lists are from October 23 and Google can be slow to flag a closure, so the figure may be low. In Plexa the four permanently closed ones were archived. [3]

What Plexa data shows about Los Cabos restaurants

Plexa added to its directory the restaurants that AI mentioned and it did not yet have. As of November 3, 2026 there are 200 active restaurants in Los Cabos on Plexa. These are figures for Plexa's listings and do not describe the whole city. [2]

  • Structured opening hours: 198 of 200.
  • Website: 157. Price range: 48. WhatsApp: 51.
  • Cuisine type: 0. Menu link: 0. These are new fields that only the owner fills in when claiming the listing.
  • Claimed by their owner: 1.

Between October 4 and November 3, 122 of the 124 restaurant listings created before November 3 (some with under 30 days in the directory) received at least one read from AI crawlers: 362 reads in total. ChatGPT accounted for 151, ByteDance 99, Claude 96, Bing 15 and Perplexity 1. In that same month, an AI read a restaurant listing while answering a person's question once (ChatGPT, 1 read). [2]

What a Los Cabos restaurant owner can do today

When AI looks for your restaurant, what it can repeat with certainty is what it can read: menu, prices, hours and whether you are still open. A readable site and your Plexa listing give it correct data to repeat; we did not measure whether it uses them. We do not promise that moves you up: in the sample, the technical quality of the site had no relationship with mentions.

  1. Publish the menu as text, with prices. Manta is the only one of the 20 that does. A simple /menu page is enough, and it is the data most of the sample does not make readable.
  2. Keep a single Google listing, with all seven days of hours. One of the restaurants in the sample has two Google listings with conflicting hours. If you closed, mark it as closed.
  3. Put a visible WhatsApp where people look for you. At least 4 of 20 publish one, and 2 could not be checked.
  4. Check what your Plexa listing already says. Cuisine and menu are blank on all 200 Los Cabos restaurant listings on Plexa until the owner fills them in.
